What You Think

from How It Is Nowadays by Mailbox

/

about

Jeff and I hooked up to form the Mailbox live band in September of 2001. After he learned a few of my songs he came to a practice with the bass line, melody, and words for the chorus. That was it. His last band had used that section as a theme for a jazzy jam type thing. When I heard it, for some reason, I just knew it was an 80's retro groove. I wrote the rest of the parts that week.

I'm not typically in favor of retro styles since it is the antithesis of originality, but I let myself slide on this one because I let myself full-on embrace the 80's element. I wrote the lyrics about who I was in the 80's and threw in some other references that made me just crack up. For good measure, I threw in a ... measure of 70's disco and then a 90's-grunge bridge just so a few more people could relate.

lyrics

You like my little lies
You like my skinny ties
You like my electric car
Even though it don't go very far

I like your...
I like your...
hmmm.

You like my copied cassettes
You like my Raisenettes
You like my Robotron score
Stick around and I'll kill even more

Don't just sit there warming your hands
Sooner or later gotta take a chance

I know what you think
You're always thinking
I know what you think
'Cause I'm always on your mind

You like my magazine
You like my GOSUB routine
You like my 12-sided die
Even though you're always wondering why

You're playing it quiet like it's some kind of game
You got a lot to learn including my name

CHORUS

You like my chess club pin
You like my tinsel grin
You like my see-through watch
Time is running out better step it up a notch

Don't forget to open your parachute pants
Or you might mess up your only chance
