We Keep Them Alive

from Irrelevant by Mailbox

about

Another SongFight entry. I think this tune came about as the result of having one ear filled with 80s New Wave from playing with Hot Neon Magic and the other ear filled with the new kiddie heavy metal that my mentee listens to when we hang out.

I've spent the last few years pushing myself to try writing lyrics from a fresh perspective. Again, not trying to be too literal or obvious.

lyrics

My my compromise
one more little dreamer
never time for wider eyes
but always time for leaving

Why, why cast aside
the one thing you needed
keeping you from suicide
your doubts do your breathing

We keep them alive
for no reason I know
We keep them inside
just as well, I suppose

Left side, angel tried
wishes it was easy
on the right, the devil fights
to keep his world from freezing

One sign left you blind
to any way but home
two fears: the dark and tears,
are everything you own.
