Under the Horse

from Get Lost by Mailbox

about

This song was originally written with Chris Combs and recorded for the weekly Song Fight contest (www.songfight.org) which we won. Woo! I was so happy with it that I knew I had to tighten it up and rework it a little for a proper Mailbox release. As I worked on the drum part and the vocals I was cursing myself for writing it in 7/8 time but ultimately I'm glad I pushed myself to make it right. It's hard to really rock out in odd time but it can be done.

Chris Combs writes: Adam had a hand-tapping technique that sounded like horse hooves, so he put the music together while I came up with lyrics. With an unbridled passion, I came up with pun after pun about horses. I couldn't stop, they just kept mounting. Adam said I had to saddle down and hold my... well, you get the idea.

Some really obscure puns ("French hair-do") deserved to be removed, but my favourite was cut, and I still love it and want the world to know. The last verse originally began:

I don't want win, place, or show
a stable life is all I ask

It was cut for logical reasons (a person who wouldn't strive for something better would still be in the doomed relationship), but it's a good line nevertheless.

lyrics

You're riding tall and free
You're riding through the town
The finish line is all you see
You keep my blinders down

I take it all in stride
I never show a tear
You're sure you'll get the break
then you'll be in the clear

I think it's time you were under the horse
Then you'd see life from the other side
and something more than just the prize

You're always on the move
You've never had a doubt
I'm giving you the truth
Just look me in the mouth

I have the sense to see
What's happened to you
You're falling apart
But I can't be the glue

You'll run but not for long
You'll trail but never last
I won't be saddled down
I'm leaving for greener pastures
