Late For a Funeral

about

"I’m always relieved when someone is delivering a eulogy and I realize I’m listening to it." - George Carlin

I was going to skip this SongFight. The only thing I was hearing with that title was an Irish ditty and I'm done with that kind of thing. One night, less than 18 hours before it was due, I started banging something out on the piano. I wrote the lyrics and music and recorded the piano and vocal track within 2 1/2 hours but got frustrated with the rest of the arrangement and abandoned it for the night. This morning, I listened back to what I had and thought it was good enough to continue. I added a couple string bits and sent it off.

My lyrical story of the delusional recluse lives on.

lyrics

Goodbye to you my dearest friend
I guess I won't see you again

I'm taking a moment of silence for today
to pray that it won't slip away

I won't spend another moment
on wondering why
the first day of the rest of my life was yesterday
and it almost passed me by

If I'm late for a funeral
you won't need to throw me a bone
you won't need to get on the phone
If I'm for a funeral
I'll be happy it's not my own

I'm taking my time. I'm taking it all.
The sky could be waiting to fall

And when that cursed day decides to arrive
I'll be able to say I'm alive
